Abstract
This study was conducted to examine the effects of compassionate writing intervention on posttraumatic negative cognitions, emotions, and stress symptoms among individuals with interpersonal adversities. Of the undergraduate students who reported a history of interpersonal adversities, 46 participants were randomly assigned to compassionate writing (n=15), expressive writing (n=15), or daily writing interventions conditions (n=16). All the three writing interventions consisted of four semiweekly sessions. All participants completed the scales of posttraumatic negative cognitions, emotions, and stress symptoms, as well as self-compassion before treatment, after treatment, and two weeks later. The results indicated that self-compassion increased significantly in both the compassionate writing intervention and the expressive writing intervention conditions, but not in the daily writing intervention condition. Also, the compassionate writing intervention was more effective for posttraumatic negative cognitions, emotions, and depressive symptoms than daily writing intervention. There was no significant difference between the compassionate writing and expressive writing intervention conditions in these variables, whereas the effect sizes for the compassionate writing intervention were relatively larger than those for the expressive writing intervention. These results suggest that the compassionate writing may be a promising short-term intervention which is effective for various psychological symptoms of young adults with interpersonal adversities. Finally, the limitations of this study were discussed along with implications for further research and clinical practice.
